Just a week after he said it would be “amazing” for the Los Angeles Lakers to land all-star Anthony Davis, LeBron James spoke about his recruiting past and how he thinks it will change now that he’s in LA.

The Lakers current roster is full of a young nucleus, aging role players on one-year contracts, and James. They are currently tied for the fourth seed in the Western Conference but in order to turn into true title contenders, they will likely need to add another high-level player that fits with James.  Since his move out west, James believes it will be easier than recruiting while he was in Cleveland.

In an interview with ESPN’s Rachel Nichols, he had this to say:

“A lot of people didn’t want to come to Cleveland, let me just throw that out there…So now that I think being in L.A., I don’t think it would be that hard to get guys here”

During their conversation, James offered that it wasn’t hard to recruit players to join him when he was in Miami which is obviously much nicer than winters in Ohio.

However, the first-year Laker did add that recruiting high-profile players next summer is not the only thing he’s currently worried about.

“But we got to win, and at the end of the day, it’s all about winning. You know, and that’s what I’m trying to do right now, is to show prospects and free agents — and at the same time, show these guys that I got right now — that we can win now, and let’s not worry about the future.”

The Lakers are not a finished product, but they should absolutely believe they can win with the team that they have. To this point, they have shown they can win against good teams. In order to carry that throughout the year and into the playoffs it’s important LeBron and co. are confident they can beat anyone at any time.

If the team is able to show they have pieces that can contribute to wins and potentially make a deep playoff run that will fill both of LeBron’s goals for the season and give upcoming free agents more to think about.

Players the Lakers are likely to pursue with their max salary slot include the Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, or a potential Anthony Davis trade.

No matter how their season ends up, the Lakers will be big players in free agency once again, but this time they have one of the best players in league history to sell potential free agents on.
